Overview

EGYM - a leading provider of connected fitness equipment and digital products for the fitness industry - engaged LeisureLabs to develop a real time digital leaderboard to support the launch of their latest innovation - Gameday.

Challenge

EGYM’s Gameday functionality uses their range of connected strength products and digital tools to enable members to compete with themselves and others and provide accurate analysis and measurable results, as well as tailored workout recommendations. A key component of this product is an in-club “leaderboard” which allows members to compete with others in the club and view their results in real time. The leaderboard is available free of charge to EGYM customers deploying the Gameday feature and can be displayed on screens around the club.

Approach

LeisureLabs worked with EGYM’s in-house product and engineering team to design an adaptive leaderboard which could be displayed on the EGYM Fitness Hub, EGYM's Branded Member App and on large format screens, and would collect and display results in real time using EGYM’s application programming interface (API). The solution deployed a number of technologies including SpringBoot, Pub/Sub, ReactJS and WebSocket and was delivered using dedicated resources from LeisureLabs' engineering team, working in collaboration with the EGYM product team.

Solution

The Gameday functionality was developed and tested with a major “high value, low price” (HVLP) fitness operator in the US as a way to raise awareness of the EGYM hardware solution and encourage members to try the equipment. Since this equipment was available only to higher tier members, the solution is designed to increase use of the equipment and drive additional revenue through membership upgrades. The digital leaderboard developed by LeisureLabs is a key component of the overall product, since it is a highly visible way of promoting Gameday within the club.

Results

Having driven significant sales uplift with trial customers, Gameday was launched to the market in April 2023, with the leaderboard taking pride of place during the US and European product launches at the IHRSA and FIBO tradeshows. The leaderboard feature will be deployed at scale across a large number of EGYM’s 15,000 customers globally throughout 2023.
