Overview

National Fitness Day is an annual event organised by ukactive which encourages the nation to celebrate the fun of fitness and physical activity across the UK. LeisureLabs were engaged by their partner, Endurance Zone, to develop and launch a mobile app for National Fitness Day 2023.

Challenge

Endurance Zone were appointed as the official rewards partner for National Fitness Day 2023. Their objective was to provide a simple way to engage a wider audience and encourage participation in physical activity by providing rewards and competitions linked with any fitness activity taking place on or after National Fitness Day. LeisureLabs were tasked with building an intuitive and easy-to-use app under the National Fitness Day brand which could be used to track fitness activity from a range of apps and wearable devices.

Approach

LeisureLabs worked with the Endurance Zone team to develop a mobile app suitable for Apple and Android users, which could provide integration with a range of wearable devices and apps including Apple Health, Google Health, Strava, Fitbit and Garmin. The mobile app was a natively compiled cross-platform mobile application built using Flutter, which was fully integrated with Endurance Zone’s existing backend services, which were already built and managed by the LeisureLabs team. LeisureLabs UX/UI design team delivered an impactful and intuitive app experience which was fully aligned with the National Fitness Day brand. A range of experts were deployed throughout the project including technical architects, product owners, business analysts, mobile and backend developers as required at different stages of the project.

Solution

The Fitness Day Rewards app, launched ahead of National Fitness Day in September 2023, provided users with a way to track their activity using a range of wearable devices and apps. Free to download and use, the app allowed users to earn one point for every minute of physical activity tracked. Points could be used to enter competitions within the app, providing multiple opportunities to win a range of prizes. Additionally, all apps users were given access to unique offers and discounts from a wide range of leading sport, fitness and lifestyle brands. These offers could be redeemed directly from within the app. The app also provided a full history and summary of activity tracked through integrated apps and devices.

Results

The Fitness Day Rewards app was delivered within budget and ahead of schedule, launching two weeks ahead of National Fitness Day on 20th September 2023. With an average App Store rating of 4.8 stars, the app has tracked many thousands of exercise minutes, with over 80% of users who connected a fitness tracker earning points, redeeming rewards, and entering competitions. The National Fitness Day campaign for 2023 reached a total audience of 88.5 million people, helping to inspire healthier lives across the UK and beyond. Results published by ukactive show that in the UK, an estimated 10.2 million people were directly motivated to participate in an activity on the day itself, while many more were encouraged to be active throughout the campaign by further events and communications.
